Nonprofits can apply for grants to address poverty, basic needs

OSHKOSH — The Oshkosh Area Community Foundation encourages nonprofit organizations to apply for grants from the U.S. Venture Fund for Basic Needs.

Separate grants are being offered in the Oshkosh area, Winneconne and Green Lake County.

The grant application deadline is March 1, 2012. To apply online, go to; under Grant Programs click on U.S. Venture Fund for Basic Needs.

U.S. Venture Fund for Basic Needs grants are funded by the Basic Needs Giving Partnership, which includes charitable resources from the U.S. Venture Open, the J. J. Keller Foundation and other partner donors at the Community Foundation.

In 2011, the U.S. Venture Fund for Basic Needs awarded a total $248,000 in grants in the three regions served by the Community Foundation.

General criteria to receive a U.S. Venture Fund for Basic Needs grant include programs that:

— Address the root causes of poverty and help individuals move out of poverty.

— Support long-term visions/solutions to move people out of poverty.

— Assist those with limited capacity, such as the low-income elderly or significantly disabled, to maintain a stable and dignified quality of life.

Grants are open to nonprofit organizations that serve residents in Green Lake County Winnebago County or Winneconne.
