OSHKOSH — Congratulations! You did it. Readers and community partners of The Northwestern hit the goal of raising $100,000 in the Stock the Shelves campaign to benefit 11 food panties in Winnebago County. The campaign hit the $100,000 goal on Wednesday thanks to the generosity of a donor's fund at the Oshkosh Area Community Foundation. In the last week of the campaign the donor's fund contributed $30,000, the largest single contribution of the campaign, to reach the goal. The Stock the Shelves campaign at The Northwestern combined with similar campaigns at nine other Gannett Wisconsin Media newspapers, has raised $480,000 for local food pantries. The Post-Crescent in Appleton, the Green Bay Press Gazette and The Northwestern accounted for $430,000 of the total. The money raised in each community will remain in that community. "We're proud to have sponsored the first Stock The Shelves campaign in Oshkosh," said Stewart Rieckman, general manager of The Northwestern. "But the credit of hitting the goal in five weeks goes to our partners and our readers. They opened their hearts and responded to the growing need of food pantries that serve families in our communities who are struggling to make ends meet in hard economic times." Rieckman cited the contributions of donor funds at the Oshkosh Area Community Foundation as the major factor in reaching the goal. Those donations accounted for $45,000 of the total giving. The campaign began on Oct. 17 with two matching grants of $15,000 from the J.J. Keller Foundation and Express Convenience Stores and a $6,500 matching grant from members of the Winnebago Chapter of Credit Unions. Participating credit unions were CitizensFirst Credit Union, Community First Credit Union, Fox Communities Credit Union, Oshkosh Truck Credit Union, Golden Rule Community Credit Union, Oshkosh Community Credit Union, Pluswood Group Credit Union, UW Oshkosh Credit Union, Winnebago Community Credit Union and the Winnebago Chapter of Credit Unions. Donations from individuals and organizations totaled almost $19,000. |
