The Winnebago County Family Literacy (WCLC) Program The overall goal of the family literacy program is to provide a welcoming environment, where both parents and children are working on increasing their skills to help alleviate the intergenerational cycle of illiteracy. The children are offered formal early learning opportunities that are aligned with the Wisconsin Model Early Learning Standards. Staff and tutors model literacy activities that parents can then do with their children on a daily basis no matter what their literacy levels are. The modeled activities help to increase the amount of interaction parents have with their children on a daily basis which positively influences and supports their emerging literacy. Illiteracy in adults directly affects social issues in our community such as health care, employment and financial stability. The Winnebago County Literacy Council has been providing literacy services to adults throughout Winnebago County since its inception in 1989. The mission of the WCLC is to increase the literacy skills of adults and families so they can make informed decisions in order to function effectively in society. The WCLC recruits and trains volunteer tutors from the community to provide tutoring opportunities to WCLC clients. The WCLC provides one-to-one tutoring opportunities in the areas of Basic Literacy, English as a Second Language, Family Literacy, Financial Literacy, Workplace Literacy and Health Literacy. |
